2014 HDR Focuses on Resilience and Vulnerability[viewed]

The 2014 Human Development Report (HDR) finds that reducing poverty, as well as vulnerability to falling into poverty, must be a central objective of the post-2015 development agenda. "Eliminating extreme poverty is not just about 'getting to zero;' it is also about staying there,” according to the report. ‘Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building Resilience' was launched in Tokyo, Japan, on 24 July 2014, by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark, and HDR Director Khalid Malik.

UNGA Concludes Structured Dialogues on Technology Facilitation[viewed]

The UN General Assembly held the fourth "structured dialogue" for Member States, the private sector, and civil society to discuss possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The co-moderators of the dialogue will submit a report, along with elements for a procedural resolution, to the UNGA President by the end of July, and expect to receive further guidance in early September.

WCDRR PrepCom1 Identifies Priorities for Post-2015 DRR Framework[viewed]

The First Session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom1) of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) met to review the organizational and substantive preparations for the Conference, approve its programme of work, and propose its rules of procedure. Over 600 government representatives and experts attended the conference, with broadly converging views on how to address threats posed by disasters and climate change.

UNECE Meetings Address Monitoring and Reporting under Water and Health Protocol[viewed]

The 7th meeting of the Task Force on Target Setting and Reporting and a regional workshop on linkages with other existing monitoring and reporting mechanisms related to water and health took place under the Protocol on Water and Health of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention).

Event: Interactive Meeting with Civil Society on Post-2015 Stocktaking Event[viewed]

The Interactive Meeting with Civil Society for the High-level Stocktaking Event on the Post-2015 Development Agenda will provide civil society, including NGOs, the media, the private sector and other relevant stakeholders with the opportunity to reflect upon the various post-2015 development-related processes that have occurred during the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, and to identify possible inputs to the forthcoming Synthesis Report of the UN Secretary-General; the work of the 69th UNGA; and the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda.

UN Officials Welcome OWG Outcome[viewed]

UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Wu Hongbo, commented on the outcome of the UN's Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that "Member States have shown a determination and willingness to work together for people and planet that bodes well for the General Assembly's negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda,” and that the proposed set of 17 goals brings together economic, social and environmental issues “like never before.”

ICESDF Co-Chairs Brief UN Member States, Stakeholders on Committee's Progress[viewed]

The Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF), Pertti Majanen (Finland) and Mansur Muhtar (Nigeria), met with UN Member States and stakeholders on 18 July 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, to discuss the Committee's progress and key messages that will be included in the final report from the Committee, which they said is expected to be concluded in August.

Kutesa Confirms Theme for 69th UNGA[viewed]

Sam Kutesa, UN General Assembly (UNGA) president-elect, announced that the theme for the 69th UNGA session will be ‘Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.' UN Member States will be invited to comment on the theme during the 69th General Debate (beginning on 24 September 2014).
