CSO Conference Develops Outcome Documents on Post-2015 Agenda

22 March 2013: Civil society organizations (CSOs), convening under the theme "Advancing the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda: Reconfirming Rights, Recognising Limits, Redefining Goals," discussed the CSO agenda for the post-2015 development agenda process.

The meeting convened from 21-22 March 2013 in Bonn, Germany, with support from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The two-day conference, which included over 260 participants, convened in sessions on thematic input areas, issue interlinkages and achieving impacts. The conference also included peer learning sessions and conversations on post-2015 expectations, narratives and partnerships.

Ten outcome documents and statements, structured around session areas, are available online. Participants also drafted a document on the High-Level Panel (HLP) on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, cautioning the panel against "reductive" goals and an "extractive development model." Although the document remains a draft, it was submitted to the HLP for its final meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

Presenting a statement on behalf of the UN Secretary-General (UNSG), Amina Mohammed, Special Advisor of the UNSG on Post-2015 Development Planning, recognized the role of CSO inputs, including those they bring from grassroots organizations, in formulating an "ambitious yet coherent framework" for development. She remarked that "lifting people from poverty and protecting the planet's resources are two sides of the same coin" and recommended increasing efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and continued global consultations on the post-2015 development agenda.

Participants supported, inter alia: basing the development agenda on human rights; respecting planetary boundaries and the rights of future generations; common but differentiated responsibilities; reforming global economic and financial regimes; and creating universal, transparent and accountable goals. [UNSG Statement] [Outcome Documents] [Outcome Preamble] [Draft Document: A Red Flag for the Post-2015 High Level Panel] [Conference Agenda] [Conference Concept Note]
